You summer in the Hamptons, and require a 4wheel drive that will never go off-road, but on occasion, get driven to the local watering-hole to have a truffle, foie gras and antelope sandwich. There's a few stipulations: 1 - Cannot look stupid parked next to your Lambo 2 - Must be equipped with winch, lift kit, snorkel and safari rack (Just in case you run into Hezbollah on your way to lunch) 3 - Look great parked next to your barn.

1 - Toyota Landcruiser (FJ40) - The iconic FJ40 is quickly becoming the darling of any Barrett Jackson auction with pristine examples fetching 100k. Relatively small size and short wheelbase make these ideal trail rigs.

Barn Appeal - 3 stars

2 - Land Rover Defender 110 - If you're a limey bastard, the only option. Also, looks dashing parked next to your barn.

Barn Appeal - 4 1/2 stars

Kinja'd!!!

3 - Mercedes Benz Gelandewagen - Back in the 70's, the Shah of Iran suggested Mercedes-Benz build a truck, so they did. Must be nice.

Barn Appeal - 4 1/2 stars

Kinja'd!!!

4 - Lamborghini LM002 - Shares it's 7.2 V12 with the Countach. Really, that's all the info I need.

Barn Appeal - 2 1/2 stars

Kinja'd!!!

5 - Mercedes Benz Unimog - Arnold would certainly take a break from having sex with his maid to say hello. Dwarfs your barn.

Barn Appeal - 5 stars

I challenge you and Ramblinrover, and maybe a few other to a useless car knowledge off one of these days. Let me think how I can frame this within kinja. Who on Oppo wants to see this?

Also, FJ40 vs 62, I think it is a draw for Hamptons/Marthas etc duty

Not too many in the Hamptons actually. Cape Cod? Yes.

Okay, the most upper-class New England 4x4 ever.

Defenders are the biggest "4x4 icon" in the Hamptons by a long shot. I've never seen an old school G-Wagen out there, but there are plenty of NAS G500s, G55s, etc. Of course, the Range Rover is the biggest player by far, but you really only see new ones. Honorable mentions? LR4 and Cayenne. Never seen a minty FJ out there either.

I don't know about the breadth of my knowledge per se - not that it's not wide, but it's like a succession of crevasses in a broad glacier covered in thin melt. Then again, if I know something, chances are *very* good it's useless. Like the fact that Plymouth updated their shock design in the early 40s to a more modern style, and that was probably what an "informed customer" was referring to in the old GM sales-training video "Hired!" Or, that early 50s Dodges have some of the shortest shocks of any car out there (under 11"). Or that Ford used the same dash panel (roughly) for the Falcon as for most 60s Ford full-size trucks until around '65, but that the steering column's different versions are occasioned more by whether the car is an auto or stick due to a completely different sleeve design. Oh yeah, and early Mustangs are prone to rust under the seat boxes because they were not painted there from the factory. I also know the correct order of friction plates in a Dana Power Lock mounted to a CJ-5 front axle.

Model year changes on ordinary Corollas? Fuck me, no idea.

Solid FJ40 competitor:

66-75 Bronco rebuilt by Icon. The price tag form Icon is between $150-210k.

(EDIT: I forgot to mention that doesn't include the 10-20k rusted out old Bronco needed to make nice Icon Bronco)

oh yeah, but the 62 has more modern bits that appeal too. I had a bj60 diesel with a 4 speed, but a bj62 would have had a TD with a 5 speed. Not that it cant be swapped in a day, and I liked the setup, but rich people...

True, I just love those Broncos.

I messaged them because I wanted to find out how much they cost and the dude was ready to slide me into the production run list and i'm like whoa whoa, was just curious because you don't have prices.

I should have used the old example "If you have to ask, it's too expensive". Because that was damn true lol.

yeah, those are so bizarre to see, but I agree. 55 would make the list if there were enough floating around. There is one up the street from my house that has been sitting since I bought the place 6-7 years ago. Just rusting away

this was their email, note it was back in 2013, prices could have raised since then:

Thanks for your interest in ICON. If you asked and specific questions, please pardon this automated reply and trust we will address them soon. Attached is our Brand Book, which explains what we are about. Our Fj series retails $135-195,000 depending on specifications, and average a 12-16 month build time. The CJ3B ranges $108-146,000. The Bronco is sold out for 2014, and we are taking holding deposits for the 2015 batch, which is almost sold out as well. The Derelict & Reformer build times and cost vary wildy, depending on the build. We recently moved to a much larger facility, so we hope to reduce the build times. Happy to send a build sheet with pricing and options once I understand which models interest you.

My grandfather had a summer "cottage" that he rented out in the Hamptons and an actual cottage in Saratoga, and those are all pretty dead on. He had a red (later gen) Landcruiser, and IIRC a lot of his buddies had stuff ranging from Explorers to G-Wagens. A lot of them did do time doing 4WD things, like towing boats/horses, off-roading, grunt-work, etc., and a lot never saw anything worse than pebbles on the estate driveway.

That Lambo looks amazingly ridiculous though. Didn't Sadaam's son have one of those?

Kinja'd!!!1

LOL

I think they only had to find 10-15 people for a sellout. Sorry that was the auto email, this was the real response. He talks about Bronco #13 backing out so i doubt they make a lot of them:

We have sold out of Bronco's for 2014 production, and are now taking refundable $10,000 holding deposits for the next batch, which is almost sold out as well. If I had to anticipate a delivery time, I suspect it would be around Q2 of 2015. There are none for sale ready to go. Right before I received your email, a client who bought Bronco #13 called to inform me that his wife is quite sick and he will not be proceeding with his order. So if you wanted that build space, I could have the truck completed by (est) September 2014. These are a very intensive, hand built projects. My estimate is conservative, as we are currently ramping up production and hope to compress the schedule. I would rather tell you too long than too short!

The attached Build Sheet shows the various options and configuration choices. The hard top is removable, and an option. We offer hard (half and full) tops and soft tops. We also offer them with manual or automatic transmissions. Here is a link to our Brand Book , explaining all of our antics. The Bronco price range runs $150-210,000 excluding the core vintage Bronco (est.$10,000-20,000). Prices exclude transport costs. You will note numerous options on the Build Sheet, plus happy to entertain custom designs or utility provisions. Each ICON Bronco is a restoration with modifications, starting with a 66-75 model year Bronco, so registration is an ease. Happy to discuss at any time.

Haha yeah it would. though the Icon bronco comes with a 5.0 Coyote V8 and entirely modern wiring/driveline. Much better for someone who doesn't wrench and wants to park it next to their barn...
